Mustang trekking — the trans-Himalayan kingdom

A Tibetan-Buddhist enclave in Nepal's rain-shadow. The only major trek that runs through monsoon.

Mustang district sits north of the Annapurna massif, deep in the Himalayan rain-shadow. Upper Mustang (north of Kagbeni) was closed to foreigners until 1992 and remains a restricted area with one of Nepal's highest permit fees: USD 500 for the first 10 days, USD 50 per day after, plus ACAP. The walled medieval capital Lo Manthang sits at 3,810 m. Lower Mustang (around Jomsom) is freely accessible and forms the western end of the Annapurna Circuit.
