Half the teahouses above 4,500 m close for winter. Plan to stop at Lobuche; Gorak Shep is often unstaffed. Sky is the clearest of the year and the trail is empty. You'll need a 4-season sleeping bag, plastic boots, and a guide who has done winter Khumbu before.

Dawa SherpaGuide· 3 weeks agoI've led 4 winter Khumbu treks. Stop at Lobuche, not Gorak Shep. Half the teahouses past Dingboche are unstaffed Jan–Feb.

Sarah K.Trail Enthusiast· 2 weeks agoDid EBC in late December. Skies were the clearest I've ever seen but the cold at night was brutal. Bring a -25°C bag, not -15°C.
